MONDAY MARCH 4

Staying in Haifa at the Beth Shalom Hotel. Clean rooms. Nice people. Adequate room, nothing fancy. Decent buffet breakfast, scrambled eggs, boiled eggs, yogurts, delicious rolls, tomatoes, cheeses--typical Israeli breakfast.
Took bus to Baha'i Gardens. Beth, Mike, and Emily. Had tea, cookies, and got registered for the pilgrimage. Emily has been a Baha'i for decades but it is her first time here. We walked down to a little grocery store and bought groceries for lunches and stored them in refrigerators in the registration center. We met a British couple, and 2 single ladies travelling alone who happen to be staying on our hotel! And 6 male bicyclists who had bicycled from Germany to Haifa! They were just there to see the gardens. And we met some nice Baha'is from CA, from DC, and from Flagstaff.
Photos on our little camera don't do the gardens justice, but here is what we saw today.
These people are from Britain. Hugh and Julia.

The Med Sea doesn't show up very well in the distance. It was a cloudy day.

The gardens were started because the Founder of the Baha'i Faith (Baha'u'llah) was imprisoned/exiled for 40 years, from 1852 to 1892. He loved the beauty of nature and didn't get to see flowers all those years.

There are many different beautiful buildings there
also. All this on Mt. Carmel.

In the afternoon, we got to go into the Shrine of the Bab. Baha'is believe that the Bab (Persian for the Gate), who was martyred in 1850, was sort of like John the Baptist, heralding the One to come later.

And the Glory of the Lord came into the house by way of the Gate whose prospect is toward the east." Ezekiel 43:4

There are 9 tiered terraces. Entering this shrine was a very holy experience.

Then we took a "sharut" back to the hotel and walked to a nearby falafel place for dinner with 2 other ladies, one from Germany and the other 1 from DC.
